Minutes Certainty adjusts the width of the true position circle for the accuracy of sight.
Default width of the Line of Position circle, is 10 (minutes=miles).
Users can adjust the width lower for sights with greater accuracy.
Drawing of circular LOPs "Minutes Certainty" are forced to be a 3 pixels wide lineat any resolution. Zooming in will reveal the real width (depending on the Minutes of Certainty (minutes=nm) shown.
With two checkboxes for Towards/Away, of course only one will be checked at a time.
Enter lat/long position from DR, GPS, Current Boat Position or some future planned DR point for a sight 20 minutes or an hour later and in some other location.
Choice of a Celestial Body using "Find" provides Hc, and help navigator find the body.
Then Sight completion provides Ho value.
Now use Intercept.
Intercept = Hc - Ho (absolute value) in arc-min & nm
Arc Minutes = nautical miles.
If Hc => Ho, then the Body is “Away” ELSE it is “Toward”.
Away = the actual position (LOP) is further away from the from the observed celestial body than your DR/Fix position.
NOTE:
If the user checks off the Boat Position radio button and then Lat and/or Lon change.
When tabbing through the form, the Altitude and Azimuth is recalculated (existing feature).
Since Lat or Lon changes, the intercept must also be recalculated, but only after Altitude and Azimuth is recalculated. Intercept = Hc (Altitude) minus
Ho (Observed Altitude).
Away and Towards radial buttons also need to be recalculated.
Dead Reckoning Shift: Difference between estimated position (DR position) and the actual position determined by celestial observations or other means (GPS).
DR shift is used to correct the estimated position of a vessel.
Dead Reckoning is a method used to estimate a ship's position based on its previous known position, course, speed, and time traveled.
RFE: Sight Properties > Time UTC #53 (Change to UTC)
Hours, minutes and seconds are not automatically completed from Computer Time
For each Sight, Watch Time is recorded with paper and pencil, or Cell phone recording timer.
Later for each Sight, enter Time UTC= Watch time +/- Watch Error +/- Zone Description into the form. Eg: If you are at 30 degrees West latitude, you are at ZD+2.
