At present the shower mats all lay on the ground after use:

which means they don’t dry. This is horrible. 😕
We need to make a few custom rails for hanging them so they dry effectively. 🚿

Prepared the first rail using 30mm dowel and scrap wood from previous projects:

Already measured and drilled the holes, 🕳️
So tomorrow, just have to mount it in place. ⏳
(Waiting for waterproof wood glue to dry overnight…)

fairly certain this will work well. 💭
Tempted to crack-on with building more. 🤔

We also need to buy 6 identical dark grey bath mats for the basement shower to avoid people taking a random WHITE hand towel and using it on the floor:

not only did this person step on the WHITE towel with muddy shoes, they obviously didn’t bother to hang it after their shower. 😢

But we cannot “blame” this person; there is no system for them to follow. 💭

But this kind of “Don’t Care About Anyone/Anything Else” attitude makes me very sad. This person wouldn’t grab a WHITE towel for the floor in their mother’s house … or maybe they would … 🤷‍♂️
But here they don’t give a sh!t … 😭

It really is the attitude that is problematic.

Will you/I/someone be varnishing or sealing this towel rail?
Un-sealed wood in a bathroom in winter, used for the purpose of hanging very wet towels will go mouldy very quickly. I thought you might be welding this together when I first saw the issue!

Agreed. 😕

I planned on painting it with the same wood white paint we used for the pantry cupboards (which we then painted different colors.

First coat of white paint applied:

heading back up to my desk while it dries…
Think it needs at least two coats to be effective.
Tempted to give it some color on the second coat.
huge fan of color to make it clear to everyone that things aren’t store-bought but made @home 🌈

Dried quite quickly. 👌
Second WHITE coat applied:

@iteles what are your thoughts on painting them diff colors? Obvs white paint is cheaper than colors … but do we want to “brighten” the downstairs shower room with some color? 🌈💭

For added context: if this works, I will be making 3 more for the basement shower room others for upstairs. So can paint the same colors (Blue, Green, Yellow & Red) as have done on previous projects.

Personal view: white paint will bring in (reflect) the most light and facilitate maintenance (both for spot painting, painting and buying the paint).

White.

Is this paint water resistant though? Because if it gets a little soggy from the wet towel being on it for long periods of time and then someone pulls it off? That paint will go straight onto the towel and off the rail.

Can we test one for a couple of weeks before making more?

If you're short on projects I need to open an issue on a front facing bookshelf 😂

Coolio. I expect them to be covered (with mats) for most of the time. So white is fine, and cheaper. 👌

We haven’t had any issues with paint coming off on any previous projects. But we also haven’t left them in direct contact with damp .. I honestly don’t know. 🤷‍♂️
But given that the paint is water-based and gets fully absorbed into the wood, I suspect it will be stable.
Very happy to test it for a month while doing other higher priority things. This was just buggin’ me each time I walked into the W/C. 😒
