Is there a way to put Linux menu shortcuts into "Science" or "Development" categories?

What is the idea?

Over at scientific-python/installer#11 we noticed that Linux desktop application shortcuts go into the "Other" category by default. Is there a way that we missed to specify another category, such as "Science" or "Development" for our application shortcuts on Linux? If not, do we need to move the files in a post-install step, or is there a better way?

Ah - that's strange. Indeed we have this in our menu.json:

      "linux": {
        "Categories": [
          "Science"
        ]
      },

However, when the desktop file gets written after installation, we have this:

$ cat .config/menus/applications.menu

Shouldn't it be:

        ...
        <Include>
            <Category>Science</Category>
        </Include>
        ...

? Or did we format our JSON incorrectly?

Our CI is installing menuinst 2.2.0 into the installer build environment.
