Try and define the idea of "standard" -- where many companies use the title in the same way to represent the same sort of work, vs "non-standard" which is more likely to exist at a startup where people where multiple hats. Non-standard roles requiring additional thought/effort into how to write a JD and how to interview/qualify for.

"Standard" roles

  • Frontend engineering - primarily building UI flows
  • Backend engineering - building APIs and Services
  • Devops - building infrastructure, pipelines etc.

"Non Standard" roles

  • Devops AND product engineering
  • Engineering AND design
  • Others..
