I'm prototyping a smart energy meter and I'm wondering if it is a good choice to go with?

Unfortunately, I am not a good reference to answer your question at this time.
We have other projects in progress that we are busy with, and we have not yet reached a definitive conclusion about HLW811x. On the other hand, this chip has very bad documents in English, which has slowed down our work.
This repository has not been completed yet for the same reasons.
